Denise Zabel, MA, LLPC, Michigan counselor

Meet Denise

An honest, warm counselor who has sat on your side of the room

I’m Denise Zabel, MA, LLPC. I help adults across Michigan recover from narcissistic abuse, toxic relationships and trauma.

Why I do this work

You deserve a counselor who actually wants to be in the room with you. I’ve loved psychology since my first class, and it has never felt like work. I earned my bachelor’s in psychology, spent years in other work, and raised five children before coming back to counseling. That life outside an office is part of what I bring to you.

You won’t get someone hiding behind a desk or a clipboard. You’ll get honesty, real lived experience, and someone who will sit with you in the hard things and not look away. I’m not good at pretending, so you’ll always get the truth from me, kindly.

I’ve been in therapy myself for over 30 years, so I know what it takes to sit on your side of the room and finally say the thing you’ve never said out loud. I won’t forget how much courage that takes.

What working with me is like

You’ll be treated like a new friend, someone with something real to offer, not a case file. Early on I do a lot of listening, because people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. You set the pace for what you share.

Whatever brings you in, we’ll look at what’s underneath it too. As my own therapist likes to say, “The problem is never the problem.” And if something feels like too much, you can say so. I don’t call that resistance. It just tells me we’re going too deep too fast, so we slow down.

When it might help, I’ll share what has worked in my own life. You can try it or leave it. Your brain is built to learn new ways of responding, and I believe you can heal and change.
