Christian counseling, with as much or as little faith as you want

Many of my clients are Christians learning to see themselves the way God sees them. If that’s you, I’ll bring faith into our work in the way that feels right to you. And if you’re not sure where you stand with God right now, that’s welcome here too.

How faith can show up in our sessions

You choose, and you can change your mind at any point.

Woven all the way in

Prayer, Scripture and the questions faith raises become part of how we work, alongside proven tools like DBT, CBT and ACT.

Part of the conversation

Your beliefs are welcome when they come up, without them being the focus of every session.

Left at the door

No faith at all, or not right now? We’ll leave it out completely. You’ll get the same care.

“God never gives you more than you can handle” isn’t the whole truth

People mean it kindly. But if God only ever gives us what we can handle, then feeling overwhelmed would mean something is wrong with you. It doesn’t.

Grief, betrayal and abuse are more than anyone can handle alone. That’s often exactly where we learn to lean on God and on others. Being overwhelmed is a human response to something heavy, not a failure of faith.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

When church has been part of the hurt

Sometimes the people who should have been safest weren’t. If a church leader or community controlled you, shamed you or wouldn’t hear you, it can feel painfully familiar to an abusive home or relationship. We can talk about that honestly, and you can keep your faith, question it, or set it down for a while.

What Christian clients often bring

  • Guilt about leaving, or wanting to leave, a toxic marriage
  • Confusion about forgiveness and boundaries
  • Breaking generational patterns so your kids don’t inherit them
  • Anxiety, depression or past trauma, through a faith lens
  • Feeling like you’re never enough, for God or anyone

Questions about Christian counseling

Do I have to be a Christian to work with Denise?

No. Christian counseling is something Denise offers, not a requirement. Clients of any faith, or none, receive the same care.

Is this the same as pastoral counseling?

No. Denise is a state-licensed counselor using evidence-based therapy. Faith is integrated when you want it, but sessions are clinical counseling, and many are covered by insurance.

Is online Christian counseling covered by insurance?

Often, yes. Denise accepts most major plans in Michigan, including Medicaid. See fees and insurance.

Can counseling help with church hurt or spiritual abuse?

Yes. Denise can help you sort through what happened, without pressure to leave your faith or to stay in a community that harmed you.

Wherever you are with God, you’re welcome here.
