Substance use counseling that looks at what’s underneath
The drinking or using is rarely the whole story. Often it started as a way to cope with something else, like stress, anxiety, or feeling nervous around people. Together we find out what it’s doing for you, and what could work better.
Questions worth asking
- Do I really need a drink to be social, or am I just nervous around new people?
- Does it relieve my stress, or create more?
- Am I hiding how much I use from the people I love?
- It worked for me once. Is it still working now?
No judgment if you’ve slipped
Slips happen. If you can go two weeks and then fall back, that tells us something useful, not that you’ve failed. We look at what happens around week two, and build a plan so you don’t end up in the same place.
I work most often with alcohol and cannabis use, and also with other drugs. Some people come because a family member or a court asked them to. That’s okay too.
A safety note
Street drugs are often mixed with fentanyl, even when you don’t expect it. If you or someone you love uses, keep naloxone (Narcan) on hand. It’s available over the counter at most pharmacies. In an emergency, call 911.
Questions about substance use counseling
Do I have to quit before starting therapy?
No. You can start wherever you are. Many people begin while they’re still using and figure out their goals as we go. If you need medical help to stop safely, I’ll help you find it.
What if I’ve relapsed before?
That’s common, and it’s welcome here. A past relapse gives us information about what triggers you and what support you need next time.
Can substance use counseling be done online?
Yes. Sessions are by secure video anywhere in Michigan, which makes it easier to keep showing up, even on hard weeks.
